In direct comparison to modern day thread weaving spells it would take high ritual Circle Wizards or Elementalists of twelfth, perhaps higher, to cause such raw damage. Shockingly, the power displayed by the sorcerers in the Messar Massacre seem to be more of a slightly "above average" spell caster in Pre Scourge Barsaive. The awe inspiring might of true Pre Scourge sorcery is truly frightening to comprehend. An account of the aftermath of the Messar City Massacre:
"Support beams were giving away, mudbrick walls tumbling, cut stone shattering explosively in the blistering heat of the mage fire. Smoke covered everything with its deathly, bitter shawl. Every now and then a distant scream sounded from the city's heart while packs of dogs rooted through the left behind refuse.
Opposite the grounds, rose the fortified wall of the defender's compound. Streaks of black scarred the few section of bleached stone remaining upright. The sorcery that had assailed the wall had breached it in four places that I could see, each one a sundering of stone wide enough to rush a phalanx through. Bodies crowded the breaches, sprawled amidst the tumbled blocks. None wore much in the way of armor, and the weapons I saw scattered about ranged from antique pikes to butcher's cleavers.
The defenders, mainly common folk and farmers, had fought hard, meeting their attackers at every breach; in the face of savage sorcery, and overwhelming numbers they had cut down their attackers by the score.
To no avail. We found very few survivors".
