Synopsis:

The Scourge is upon the world.  Or at least you think it must be.  Maybe?  When your village built its kaer to hide from the horrors until the Scourge was over, it also created a timekeeper to measure the level of magic and passing of time until it was safe to leave.  That was several generations ago and the protective runes seemed to hold fast against the Scourge, but feeling trapped for a lifetime can do odd things to people.

Years ago, Dresim the Mad (as he is known to your generation) became progressively more deranged while living in your underground world.  Fearing his irrational behavior, the Elders of your community imprisoned him, but that only made the situation more dire when he broke free.  He was found at the entrance to the kaer where he had scrawled on the protective runes an intricate pattern with his own blood.  He must have worked quickly to have completed the shape before going unconcious from lack of blood after he cut off each of his fingers on one hand at the knuckle.  The blood on the runes had crystallized and was easily scraped off but the true damage he had done would not be apparent for some time to come.

From what you have been able to piece together from talking to the adults, it was about a year before anyone noticed.  All the men were sterile or the women barren.  Whatever the cause, no child could be conceived in the kaer.  Once the truth of it came to be known, there was a panic in the kaer and concern about the future of the people.  It was only then that the Elders revealed that Dresim in his insanity had destroyed the timekeeper.  Would the kaer simply die out in fear of leaving or would they brave the outside world to avoid the hopelessness of the inside?  Sides were formed, arguments were had, sometimes blood was shed, but ultimately it was easier to keep waiting than to take that brave step.  There were dissenters but the people stayed.

You were the last ones born.  Conceived before the incident, born into the friction that followed.  Your lives have been dominated by doom and hopelessness, but even then a few kept a spark of hope alive.  Now, the last of the previous generation lies dying and the time is upon you.  If the Scourge is not over and the world is stll beset by horrors, you will perish, but you will at least take the risk rather than perish in the kaer that has become a tomb.  It is time to open the kaer.
