Publish or Perish

     Father Fredrick Tucker was the son of Butch Tucker, an owner of a small construction company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  All his life his father guided his life to take over the family buisness.  Each summer vacation was spent learning various bits and peices of the trade, but mostly Fredrick was mostly asked to work the Steam Shovel, Crane, and Steam Roller, although he was familiar with most of the machines.  He didn't really want to get into construction as he felt something else tugging at him.  Some higher calling that he couldn't quite make out.  That something came one warm day in late October. 

     Being a rare warm day, many of the workers had taken their jackets off.  One of them did so on the 3rd story scaffolding of an appartertment they were building.  He ended up triping over it and falling.  Fredrick was the first at the scene.  The worker had broken his arm and gotten a bad cut on his leg.  The wound was bleading badly.  Fredrick took the workers jacket and tried to stop the bleeding but it wouln't.  Fredrick prayed to God and tried once more.  Miraculously the bleeding stopped.  While the others got the hurt worker to the hospital, Fredrick just sat dumbfounded.  He would become a priest.

     Now, Fredrick and his father had never seen eye-to-eye, especially after his mother had died 7 years back.  As an only child he was expected to take over the buisness.  When he told his father, all Butch said was: "Do what you like, but you'll get no help from me".  Fredrick used the money he had earned for the tuition at a Seminary school.  He and his father rarely spoke while he was in school, but Butch attended the graduation ceremony and somberly told Fredrick his was proud of him. 

     Fredrick preached out of Milwaukee for a time.  He found he had a natural ability to connect and empathize with them.  After Fredrick's 30th birthday his dad came down with Tuberculosis and ultimately died.  He didn't have anybody to leave the company to so he had it liquidated and Fredrick inherited a small fortune.  He moved to Minneapolis to get away from the pain of his father's passing.

     Twenty-five years later Fredrick was up for a promotion to Cardinal.  The promotion was between him and another Priest from Chaska.  The other priest ended up fabricating a scandal with Fredrick in the middle of it, and threatend to bring it public unles Fredrick withdrew.  And withdrew he did.  He lost a good protion of his faith in humanity that day.  Within a month he decided to stop preaching for a time to try and find himself and the Lord again.  He still spoke when asked to by colleagues and attended local and comunity events, but no longer advertised himself.

     He turned his energies to other venues.  He used  some of the money from his inheritance to purchace a cabin to the north-west.  He has taken up hunting.  Mostly for birds and small game but occasionally deer and other large game.  He owns a pair of hunting dogs.  A golden retreiver named Ezekiel "Zeke" and a Black lab named "Micah".  He has two horses.  A gelding named "Hadad" and a mare named "Abigal".  A local boy (Simon) helps him to tend to the horses, especially when Fredrick is camping or out of town.  He reads.  A lot.  He has a subscription to a dozen papers across the nation and a few over-seas.  He reads books in Latin.  He also reads local publications, including the Apocrypha.  He has gained interest in the supernatural, especially since some of what he has read in it sound biblical in nature.
