Grant is an everyday normal blue collar guy who turned to petty crime at an early age to support himself when he ran away from home at 14. The next 5 years up until he enlisted were spent running numbers, petty theft, larceny, a little sabatoge here and there, begging when he needed to, and selling information to people that needed things. It culminated in his murder of another man over something minor. He enlisted to get out of town. He fought in the war, as an aviator, but was shot down and avoided capture behind enemy lines for six days right up until the Armistice was signed. He returned home and tried to find a legitiate job as a mail carrier, but that didn't work out. Having been married back in '14 he uses his many contacts around town, and those he met overseas, to get people the things they need for a price. Now, at age 24 he's a cross between a junkyard salesman (has a small warehouse of miscelaney), a petty criminal, an informant, and a smuggler.

He's a tall guy, with a broad build, but not alot of muscle from a lack of hard work. His size can be intimidating, but not of alot of actual use. He's bald, has a round face, and an easy smile. He wears a cheap brown suit and a smallish hat, with heavily worn shoes like a traveling salesman or a cop. He is never without his pocket knife, pocket watch, and pocket book. He usually carries a pen, notepad, and handkerchief. A couple packs of matches and cigarettes are also always on hand.

He drives an old 1916 Dodge Model 30 touring sedan, and has a war-surplus Dayton-Wright DH-4 biplane parked at a farm up in Coon Rapids (it cost him $2000). His small bungalow house out in the sticks of Brooklyn Center is large for the period and has ample room for his wife Janie and three kids August (son 3), Tyler (son 2) and Janine (daughter 8 months).

At his house he keeps a variety of tools and guns. Being out in the sticks yard work involves cutting logs and cutting your grass with a scythe. He also hunts when its in season, mostly game birds, so has a few shotguns, single barrels, double barrels, cut-off, and a Model 1912. Pistols include an Army Colt M1917 revolver and a Colt 1911 automatic. His favorite is a Model 1921 Thompson Submachine gun he got at the grocery store for $225. He's not that good with it, but always wanted one in the war and so bought one when he got home.

Around his neighborhood and the german neighborhoods of North Minneapolis, he knows alot of people. Some good, some bad. Beat cops, auto mechanics, plumbers, bricklayers, and other tradesmen are his lunchtime companions. Petty criminals, smugglers, dockworkers, gamblers, flappers, and bootleggers his night time companions at various speak easies around town. He's also a man around town and knows importing compaies, lawyers, bankers, small business owners, truckers, dockworkers (Minneapolis has a port) and tramps. They're often as much trouble as they are help. He's been picked up numerous times by other crooks name dropping to save their own tails. Police like to make him sweat until he agrees to help.
Grant's family is very important to him. His wife, Janie is the center of his life. She's patient and strict. His oldest son, Jason, is five; his second son, Jesse, is three; and his youngest, his daughter Lucy is thirteen months.
Over the course of Grant's misadventures, he took to carrying more guns and posting watches. He has also taken to calling Daryl the name Fuller.
