Factions

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years ago

Factions is the first game released by Other Court Games, an indie game publisher located in the Twin Cities. It is a modern fantasy role playing game, set in a world of gritty noir streets, mysticism, secret societies, and paradigm warfare. The players take on the role of the Gifted, those who can bend reality to their will and eventually climb the metaphysical ladder to god-hood... providing they live long enough to enjoy their newfound power.

In this world, there are four levels of being.

  • Normals (or Mundanes), who on the face of it cannot perceive or believe in the supernatural
  • Edgers, who can perceive the supernatural and cast Rituals, but are limited in power
  • Gifted, who have begun the ascent to god-like power
  • Elements, who are the personifications of various aspects of the cosmos, such as Corruption, Passion, or Justice

Most Gifted belong to one of the Factions, secret societies that manipulate metaphysical energies and pull the strings in the world. The most powerful group of Factions is the Order, a megalithic, Orwellian Sect that runs the US Government and many corporations. It is the Order that is responsible for turning America into a nightmarish police state. The next group is the Free Societies, which has banded together for mutual support and protection. The third Sect is the Alliance, which wages a resistance war against the Order (and is therefore the major driving force behind the civil war in the United States).

The Gifted have access to two kinds of supernatural feats: Ritual Magic and Special Abilities. The Ritual Magic in Factions is based on real-world esoteric belief systems. Every religious or occult methodology "works" according to the same metaphysical laws, and is capable of producing mystical effects. As a rule, Ritual Magic takes a long time to perform, adheres to strict principles, and has severe consequences for failure. Special Abilities are the "instant on" feats a Gifted can perform, governed by higher reality mechanisms of the cosmos. Where Ritual Magic works because people collectively believe it does, Special Abilities work because the Gifted himself makes it so.
