Call of Cthulhu
Call of Cthulhu is a horror roleplaying game based loosely on the works of famed horror author H.P. Lovecraft and other authors whose combined works are referred to as the Cthulhu Mythos. The game uses very simple rules (a percentage system) and focuses instead on the roleplaying aspects.
The most unique feature of Call of Cthulhu is that each character has a Sanity rating, and throughout the game the horrifying things that occur will lower the character's sanity, possibly causing mental disorders. This is based around the concept in Lovecraft's writings that the human mind has the capacity of sanity, or to hold the truths of the univers, but not both. The other major theme of Lovecraft's writing reflected in the game is that humans are insignificant in the gerater scheme of things, and many of the elder creatures in the game pay little if any attention to humans, even though the creature may inadvertently destroy the Earth.
Call of Cthulhu was first published in 1981, and has sold over 225,000 copies of the core book, which is now on its 6th edition.
