Batman's Case File: "The Impossible War"

General Thoughts:

The Psion's following the Master Race ideology is an obvious attempt to get our attention.  Either they want us to intervene for some reason or they want us away from Earth for another. If it's a trap we'll spring it.  If it's a feint, J'onn and the new JLA can handle things just fine on Earth.

I can't help but wonder who the hell benefits from interstellar war? War profiteers, obviously. Though the cost of invading another galaxy, my understanding, is astronomical, which would mean there is little monetary gain invading another solar system. It is simply not cost effective.  There must be another reason and that reason lays with who, or whatever is controlling them.

And how did they cross the Kepler Verge?  For thousands of years the black hole sectors and the vicious nebulas have kept fleets from crossing. How have the Psion's conquered the navigational impossibilities of the Verge?  Even Clark has problems making his way through the nebula mass in under a month, yet an an entire fleet of capital and cruiser class star ships made it in a few days?

The Psion's are clever but not that clever.  I smell the science of Braniac, or the dark engine technology of Apokolips or Eclipso's magic.  One of those three.  Wally thinks it's Despero and Diana hopes it's Black Adam.  No, it's one of my three. But which one?  An alliance between two or all three seems impossible.  Darkseid sharing victory with Braniac?  Eclipso befriending either?  I just can't see it.

But what if?

Zatanna is convinced it's Eclipso.  Blood and Fate agree.

I'm not so sure.  It seems impossible and I don't deal in impossibilities.

Follow the Money plus who benefits?  Solves all crime. Even interstellar crime.

But I must admit, there is a certain doubt in my mind. What if all three of them worked together?

Hell.  What if?

But no.  I can't think of that.  It's impossible.  Move on to something probable, Bruce.

Braniac and Darkseid and Eclipso working together?

It's impossible.

We've been here just over a week and there is less clarity now than ever before. What is going on here in this sector of space. I understand all the pieces and all of their moves but not who's calling the shots.

I've made waves here among the natives both good and bad. I've been approved as a Specter, basically a government endorsed bludgeon to deal with their problems. I cant' help looking at it as what Kal does for the Fed's on earth and he's been caught pulling for the wrong side more than once. I don't like it. I don't trust it and I can't help this feeling that I am being watched at every turn. It's not paranoia if they are actually out to get you, right Bruce?

Eclipso is involved somehow.  We've had two run ins with him ending in an Eclipso retreat both times.  He's not behind this, doesn't feel right.  My gut tells me Brianiac but I don't have the evidence, yet.

Dianna is going to attempt to recruit the yellow lanterns in Sinestro's own base of operations. I don't need to keep rehashing why this is a bad idea but there is no changing her mind on the topic. At least she is is going with a little backup. She has been significantly more despotic since arriving in this sector and I get the feeling she is keeping things from the rest of us.

The one thing I do know for certain is Cyborg Superman must be prevented from controlling the Massive and techno-superior Geth army. He has a head start and we are spread too thin. Kal is not even sure he can take him if it comes to that. So if it does come to that we had better all be together and on the same page.

Too much about this side brings too many unanswered questions.  What are biotics fully capable of?  What is the elusive humanist group Cerberus want?  Why are the Protheans uninterested in getting involved in a war exploding around their planets? How powerful a power source is element zero? Who created the Mass Effect Relays? How does the Shadow Broker play into all of this?  How many more cloned villains from our sector are plaguing this side of space?  And who has the ability to create them?  And why?  Some of them have been here for months?

Why the hell would you clone Joker and unleash him?  It can't have been to get me here.  I wouldn't have ever heard about it had the Psion invasion not happened.  Is the mastermind behind the curtain just trying to destroy things?  I never agree that some people just want to watch the world burn.  No.  There is always a reason.  You always have to benefit.

So what is the benefit of cloning the Joker and letting him lose?

I have to side bar this and move on. I am off to infiltrate the Asari home world again to coordinate with the resistance for the retaking of their planet.  With the Asari back in power in their own system the tables may get turned.

Damn, the communications with the Krogan home world have been cut off.  Sent Clark to investigate.  He found trace particles of collagen scattered through out the sector.  Protein that survives in space? It can only be one thing.  A Star Conqueror.  How did it get here?  Created with science?  Another clone?  Or summoned with magic?  Is that even possible?  Too many things seem not possible in this war.

Magic. Conventional rules don't seem to apply.  Unless, of course, you want a magician on your side to get things.  Then suddenly there are rules and laws and protocol.

I agree with Kal, I hate magic.

The Psions war efforts seem to alternate between limitless power and deceptive conspiracies. We've found evidence on Thessia suggesting that Braniac is involved. If so, it may be the true engineer of the whole axis, but it seems a strange variance from it's usual methods of destroy and assimilate. Our time on the Asari homeworld was otherwise well spent. Provided Kal and the Corps can deal with the Star Conquerer, we will have everything here ready for freeing this planet.

The Asari Commandos seem convinced they have sufficient strength to accomplish the task alone and would, were it not for the toll it would take on the Asari population. I have my doubts, but as long as they fall in line when the time comes, they're welcome to whatever boasts they like.

We encountered signs of Braniac technology after Wally received a message through his connection to the Biotic Field. Samara wanted our help in defending an island monastery from attack. The island was being used covertly in an attempt to rehabilitate their Ardat-Yakshi. When we arrived we found an extreme specist group had already arrived and were combining Braniac's tech with Asari clones to create monstrosities. We put an end to their work, but it was clear, when Samara had arrived, that at least one of the murdered Asari was quite dear to her.

I doubt that Diana's efforts with Sinestro will prove beneficial, but she can be quite convincing if she chooses to be.

Hal and Clark took care of the Star Conqueror.  Propelled it through the Mass Effect relay.  Clever. Maybe a bit reckless, but clever.  The counter invasion of Thessia will go on as planned. The ambassador to Apokolips came through and delivered hundreds of boom tube devices large enough to transport thousands of Thanagarian and Turian combat ships through space.  With the dozen remaining Green Lanterns and Clark, there shouldn't be much opposition from the Psion Axis.

Well, nothing that can really slow down Clark.  The Psions have sorcerers from the Empire of Tears, and Clark has always had a weakness to magic, but we haven't seen much evidence that these sorcerers exist.  Zatanna doesn't feel any overwhelming mystic opposition.  I suspect there are far less of these sorcerers than initially rumored.

We've confirmed Brainiac technology in this quadrant, a disturbing amount. Weaponry designed to specifically take out the League is being sold on the black market.  Red Sun Photon Torpedos, RKKS assault rifles, decoherence devices, anti matter cluster bombs, masers.  All funneled through Cerberus, an anti alien secret society that has clear visions of power.  The organization is run by an illusive man, naming himself after that very idea.  The Illusive Man doesn't have armies but does have fanatics.  Fanatic assassins armed with Brianiac Tech.  There is nothing out there about the Illusive Man. He's a ghost.  A puppet for Brainiac or Brainiac himself?

I don't know. But I don't like any of it.

Case File 2112 / ABL / Entry 5

The allied forces took Thesia away from the Psions. Casualties were minimal.  The Psions, recognizing Clark, abandoned their posts and immediately entered retreat mode. Left the brunt of the Gordainians and Branx as rear guard, the Vorcha surrendered in droves.  It was a two day route.

I came across evidence of a secret Cerberus lab, similar to what we found on the monastery.  But I grew suspicious.  Things didn't add up.  I followed a few lies to a gambling recreation area built over a river lab. It smelled like an ambush. An ambush by Eclipso.

I set up a counter ambush using Hal and Clark as bait.  It worked.  Eclipso sprung the trap too soon.  Empire of Tears sorcerers, heavy mech soldiers, spider guild warriors and assassins launched a few second soon.  I saw their positioning, couldn't quite get everyone in place for a complete tactical counter. The League led the attack with the amazons, two squads of Krogan, Garrus, Saren and Urdnot Wrex who is the first Krogan Green Lantern.

Eclipso kicked us around for a while and then pulled us in close to take us down with a radius blast from the dark heart shard.  Wally saved us.  He grappled with Eclipso, tapped into the speed force and pulled Eclipso away before he could activate the black diamond.

It saved is for a while. Eventually black energy from the dark heart shard started dropping us.  Clark went down and I knew it was over.

And then Diana returned from her deep space meeting with Sinestro.  And she returned with five warriors from the Red Lantern Corp.  And Diana was one of them.

A single red flash of rage later and Diana tore Eclipso apart.  Possibly killing him.  Well, "killing him", as much as a I understand a primordial demon can be killed.

Diana has been angry of late.  Especially after she heard about the rape camps.   But I never thought she would take it this far.

I'm not sure the best way to get that ring off her finger.  Or even if we should try.  My understanding of the rings is she'll take it off when she wants to and if she doesn't want to, even if we pry it out of her unconscious hand, they will find a way to bond again.  All my instincts tell me to get that damn ring off her.  By my experience tells me this is Diana's fight, alone.

The Psion Axis retreats into the Verge, Henshaw takes over the Geth, Diana fallen to the Red Lanterns, Cerberus funneling Brianiac tech into this quadrant, slightly imperfect cloned enemies of the League are showing up everywhere and Wally senses some sort of time anomaly attempting to communicate with him, which, if memory serves, was Black Adam's warning those long months ago.

If Brainiac has orchestrated all of this, he has a lot to answer for.

And I intend to question him.
