Background:

Alston was always small, even for a gnome. That left him unsuited to follow in either of his parents footsteps, a smith and a logger. He was not really suited to much of the physical work that was the focus of most of his community. The children his age made fun of his small size and inability to do physical labor. His parents focused instead on his two older brothers easily learned their parents' professions.

 

Instead he had an insatiable curiousity of the world around him. He was often wandering around and exploring the areas around his village when he was supposed to be working. 

 

Eventually, he found refuge with elder Orla Oak. In her, he found an outlet for his love of learning. She taught him the history of their people and Perrenland. After a few years of learning with Orla, she began to teach him magic. They discovered he had an affinity for the magics of conjuration when the first spell he successfully cast conjured Snick, his weasel familiar. 

 

After he had learned the basics of magic, Orla took him into the Vesve. There they spent years among the elves of the forest. He learned the dangers of Iuz and his minions when his curiousity took him to the eastern border of the forest. There he almost lost his life to a band of orcs. He ran away and hid after being sorely wounded.

 

Alston and Orla returned back to Lunadore where he continued to learn under her. Several years after their return, Orla became sick and eventually passed away. After her funeral, Alston felt even more alone even though he was surrounded by his kin. Eventually, he left his village to find somewhere he fit in better.

 

Since he had already spent years in the Vesve and he didn't want to go anywhere near Iuz, he went south to Furyondy. There in the larger cities, he found groups of scholars that shared his love of learning. He traveled from city to city talking to the scholars and immersing himself in their lore. To earn his keep, he would deliver messages and artifacts between groups of scholars in different cities. Occassionally, he would join expeditions looking for artifacts and learned to notice small clues that helped locate their objective.

 

As the Greyhawk Wars began, Alston finally returned back to Perrenland. He did not return to Lunadore having lost touch with his family decades ago. Instead,  he spent time wandering the smaller towns of the nation, trying to learn the lesser known history of Perrenland. Using that information he began planning expeditions into the surrounding countryside. He has gone on a few trips where he found a small clay statue that he hasn't been able to identify. He looks forward to the day when he locates a major find.

 

Recently he receive a letter from a colleague he had met in his travels.
